These are some/the items that will go in my carry on for my June 2013 trip.

The items used are: green duffel (carry on) -11.5″ x 16″ x 6.5″. This bag slips over the luggage handles of my check thru case. Tan-purse/tote is about 13″ x 19″ x 6″. Its a tote I bought online. Its about the size of a Longchamp “Le Pliage” large tote. The blue small bag is an Eagle Creek packing cube 6-1/2″ x 3″ x 10″. This particular one is an old size/style. And the other item is a large zip lock style baggie – gallon size.

What I wear

The clothes I wear: panties, bra, t-shirt, comfy jeans, jacket, scarf, shoes and socks. As you can guess, the jeans would go well with any of the tops that are packed. The jacket is versatile too.

What I pack

Here are clothes I pack in the carry on: cashmere sweater, dress pants (knit), 1 bra, 2 panties, 1 pair socks, jammies. Also, 3 t-shirts, in this case one crew neck short sleeve, one scoop neck short sleeve, one long sleeve button front shirt out of t-shirt knit fabric. All this fits into the Eagle Creek packing cube and the baggie. The sweater and spare pants go in the baggie so they don’t catch on anything.

As you may guess, these are just the clothes. There is still a lot of room in the green carry on case for toiletries and other things.

Now for toiletries

These are toiletries I take: a comb (my hair is curly so no brush), cotton swabs, makeup remover wipes. a tooth brush, tweezers, dental floss, small mirror, hair gel, hair conditioner (necessary for my curls), make up remover lotion, eye cream, face cream, eye drops, tooth paste. Some of this will end up in my 1 quart baggie for security check. Once I make it to the cruise ship, I reorganize so everything fits back into the cosmetic case.

I don’t take body soap and I don’t take shampoo. Those are items cruise ships usually have and if you spend a night at a hotel, they usually have those little bottles for you to use.

All the makeup fits in the makeup bag, including the brushes. I have: cream foundation (BB cream), powder foundation (can be used just as a powder), blush, blush/bronzer, concealer, eye shadow palette, shimmer powder. The alternative – palette with blush and two eye shadows. This could be used instead of the eye palette and the blush. If you don’t use much makeup, you can use this and eliminate the other blushes/bronzers, shimmers and eye shadow. The second set is a real minimum makeup alternative.

My suit case

Remember, zip lock baggies are your friend.

Put the shoes in baggies/small trash bags, something. Put the socks in the toes of the sandals, and put those in a separate bag. Put the scarves in zip lock type baggies. Keep the dress and shirts, including evening shirt/jackets on metal hangers or non breakable hangers (maybe the kind from the cleaners). Put these in the suiter area and roll it up. Put the shoes in first, then start adding t-shirts. Either roll or fold the tees to fit your space. Add the shapewear and undies into the side areas. Lay the pants in the flat area created by the rolled tees. Cover the shoes with tees or a rolled shirt (my sun shirt). Put the silk top in a baggie so it doesn’t get snagged. Lay it and the scarves in. If you want, put the evening jewelry in the inside pocket of the suitcase or just stuff it in a corner. If its expensive, take it with you in the carry on. The only thing left are the bras, and as you can see, there is lots of room for them. There is still room to add a small evening purse or more clothes if you desire, even another dress.

So between what you are wear, the carry on and the suitcase you have:

  • 3 pairs of pants (jeans, casual, evening)
  • 9-12 tees/tops
  • 3 jackets (safari, cashmere and sun)
  • 3 pairs of shoes (sneakers, evening, sandals/other)
  • 5 pairs of socks
  • 7 bras, 8 undies
  • 1 pair of jammies, 2 pieces shape wear (separate top and bottom)
  • 1 dress, 2 evening shirts/jackets
  • 2 shirts
  • 4-6 scarves, and 5 necklaces.

And I still have room in the carry on case and the suitcase. And yes, I can still put a swimsuit in there too. Take a look at my Pinterest page, minimal wardrobe for examples.

p.s. note: I needed those extra tees. We did laundry at a hotel and they lost one. It happens.

This is the security 1 quart baggie. It has the cream foundation/concealer, face cream, eye cream, tooth paste, hair gel, hair conditioner, makeup remover, sunscreen, eye drops and anything else that I think has to go in there. As you may guess, this means the cosmetic case and the makeup case are not packed tightly. I usually throw in 1-2 lipsticks and perfume if I want also.
